South Limburg is betting on innovation to leave its mining past behind, with four Brightlands campuses and major investments as its foundation. The possible arrival of the Einstein telescope at the Drielandenpunt reinforces that ambition and also stimulates new cooperation with Belgium and Germany.
The region thus hopes to grow into an international innovation cluster, similar to what Silicon Valley represents for the tech world. Local companies are already collaborating on the telescope and Maastricht University is growing fast. Administrators are optimistic, but stress that the telescope is an opportunity and not a guarantee of success.
