Artificial Intelligence (AI)

What are the pros and cons of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and will it actually make the world a better place, or not? Will AI soon help you with your job? What about the influence of Big Tech? And is AI actually political? In this series, experts from the AI hub Brightlands answer your questions about AI.

We speak with Jerry Spanakis, associate professor and researcher at Maastricht University. He is researching speech recognition by AI and enhancing Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR and VR) technology with AI. In his project VOXreality he is working on live subtitling of theater performances in all languages, virtual conferences and an AI coach that teaches people how to fix aircraft engines.

Meet the expert

  • Who? Jerry Spanakis
  • Function: Assistant Professor and AI researcher at Maastricht University
  • Expert in: Social Computing and Large Language Models (such as ChatGPT)
  • Works on: VOX reality

Jerry Spanakis: "I have been working in this field since AI and data engineering were not yet buzzwords. AI won't replace humans, but it can help us do more meaningful work. The real challenge is to look past the hype and focus on what we really need.'

Speech-driven innovation in VR

'VOXReality is a three-year European project together with VRDays (a European conference organizer), Athens Festival (a cultural theater), four innovative SMEs (Synelixis, HOLO, Adapt, F6S), two research partners (Maastricht University, CERTH) and social XR experts (NWO-I).

We are looking for ways to make AI speech recognition really useful in Virtual Reality and developed three scenarios for this purpose: a theater performance in which the audience can react live and influence what happens on stage, virtual conferences and a digital assistant that helps students learn to tinker with aircraft engines. The first pilot of these scenarios was promising, and a second will follow in June.'
