Province Limburg is taking a firm step towards a future-proof and flexible energy system. With the opening of the second round of the subsidy scheme 'Support process costs of energy hubs', the provincial government is again making 1.3 million euros available for the development of local energy hubs.

"With this investment, we are ensuring that Limburg entrepreneurs and energy communities are putting their shoulders to the wheel of tomorrow's energy challenges together. Energy hubs not only strengthen our economy, but also make our society more sustainable and resilient. We support where it really makes a difference," said Deputy Van Caldenberg.

Local solutions

This will enable new and existing partnerships on business parks, energy communities and park management organisations to research and develop the feasibility and design of innovative local energy solutions.

Diminish the peak

The scheme is part of the Limburg Energy Hubs Implementation Programme (LUPEH). Energy hubs offer a smart way to make the best use of locally generated energy, reducing peaks and troughs on the electricity grid. This creates more space for businesses to locate or expand, and also facilitates the connection of citizens and social initiatives to sustainable energy.

"This round stems from our ambition to really help businesses, local authorities and energy communities move forward with their energy innovations. Our first round of grants shows that there is already a lot of strength in local cooperation in Limburg," said Deputy Van Caldenberg. "With this additional round of investment, we are making it possible for more parties to jointly find solutions for grid congestion, energy storage and sustainability. Together, we will keep Limburg at the forefront of energy transition."

Great reach

After the success of the first round, in which already 13 Limburg initiatives received grants, the province hopes to support at least 10 new energy hubs and take existing initiatives to the next stage with this second round. Limburg aims to have around 25 to 30 operational energy hubs by 2030 at the latest, further strengthening the province's business climate, sustainability and employment.
