The Province of Limburg and the Limburg Water Board are launching a grant scheme from 23 June to 18 August 2026 for water management measures on agricultural plots in Limburg. Farmers and farmer cooperatives can apply for grants for investments that contribute to improved water management on agricultural land. The scheme can help Limburg farmers to cope better with periods of drought and reduce surface runoff. Applications will be assessed by Stimulus Programme Management on the basis of a pre-determined list of eligible investments.
Future-proof agriculture
Provincial Executive Member Jasper Kuntzelaers:“We are supporting agricultural entrepreneurs in taking measures that better protect their plots against drought and help reduce flooding. In doing so, we are investing together in an agricultural sector that takes water, climate and biodiversity into account. This scheme helps entrepreneurs to take measures that contribute to a future-proof rural area.”
Chrit Wolfhagen, member of the Executive Committee of the Limburg Water Board: “We consider it very important to help farmers and horticulturalists implement water management measures. That is why we have made funding available for this purpose. We hope as many farmers as possible will apply.”
Tailored investments
Using an investment list, applicants can choose which measures suit their situation. The scheme focuses on investments that improve the quality and availability of water and help to limit flooding and drought. Additional investment options have been included for farmers in sloping areas. These are so-called ‘non-productive investments on agricultural holdings’, for which a subsidy of up to 100 per cent is possible in some cases. Examples of eligible investments include rows of posts, ditches, herb-rich grassland, ‘farm’ buffers or a helophyte filter.
The subsidy ceiling is €2,409,623. Of this amount, just over €1 million comes from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and just over €1.3 million from the Limburg Water Board.
