Batteries from shared cars and home batteries together can make significant contributions to decentralized energy storage to tackle grid congestion. The Sharing Group's The People's Power Plant project started last month in Utrecht and is now looking at expanding in other cities.

'This project is now out of the pilot phase. We've shown that you can take this to scale, which is growing interest from other parties.' That message delivered a delighted Joost van Rooij of The Sharing Group as he accepted the audience award last week at the Transition Awards 2025 presentation by Change Inc.
In an online vote, The Sharing Group's project The People's Power Plant (see box) emerged as the clear winner. The company behind sharing car company MyWheels, among others, launched a unique collaboration with the municipality of Utrecht, Renault and We Drive Solar in June. Fifty MyWheels shared cars are being used as driving neighborhood batteries, which can also feed power back into the grid.
