LWV dialogue session on the potential of nuclear power:
Limburg's future energy mix
Together with the SMR Alliance Limburg, we are investigating whether and how nuclear energy can be realized in Limburg, and the LWV needs you for that!
Businesses and households are using more and more electricity. Our demand for energy sources is increasing and at the same time we want to get rid of fossil sources. Therefore, as the Province of Limburg, we are committed to as much solar and wind energy as possible and are working on sufficient and sustainable energy sources for 2030 and beyond. Nuclear energy has an explicit place in this search for the new energy mix. Technical research has shown that nuclear energy is feasible in Limburg in the form of SMRs (Small Modular Reactors).
Who is the SMR Alliance Limburg?
The SMR Alliance Limburg consists of companies such as suppliers of SMRs, potential customers of the electricity, financiers and governments. In addition, municipalities, regulatory authorities, knowledge institutes and network companies are involved as discussion partners. The alliance is focusing primarily on nuclear power for industry. The alliance will also facilitate public debate and explore where SMRs can contribute.
What to expect?
During this session we will focus on the current state of SMRs and all the opportunities and challenges associated with them. Ruut Schalij, leader of the SMR alliance and partner at eRisk group, will take you through the program.
It starts with an explanation of the SMR alliance. The objectives and working methods of the alliance are briefly explained. Then the current state of SMRs will be told. Within this main theme, the focus is on four topics:
- what SMRs are coming and when are they expected
- the waste issue
- social acceptance
- regulatory aspects
