About the film

In the film The Vegan Livestock Farmer, renowned photographer and documentary filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen follows Limburg poultry farmer Ruud Zanders. Ruud started a smaller-scale and more sustainable business after his large-scale poultry farms went bankrupt. This new concept, Kipster, is now garnering worldwide attention and it is on the eve of an international breakthrough. But meanwhile, the livestock farmer himself is increasingly questioning why he keeps animals for food. He now abandons meat, dairy and eggs as much as possible for his own consumption. Do we really need animals in the global food system?

Maker Kadir van Lohuizen meticulously captures the internal struggles of ideal versus practice in his framework. Are you doing well enough if you have developed the best possible chicken house for animal welfare and circularity? Or does that mean you are actually perpetuating the system? What do activist George Monbiot and scientist Imke de Boer think of Ruud's quest, and where do you stand yourself?

This documentary lasts 50 minutes. Afterwards we will have a discussion with makers Kadier van Lohuizen and Ruud Zanders.

This documentary includes a drink afterwards and is completely free to visit on February 5 at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo.
